Hi, I’m Danielle Wright, President and CEO of Right Choice Construction. We recently took part in an amazing initiative that benefits young students in Houston’s Title 1 schools. Right Choice Construction had a fantastic time at NRG Stadium supporting CYCLE Houston’s bike build event.
We joined forces to assemble over 1,000 bikes in support of CYCLE’s mission to improve 2nd-grade literacy in the Greater Houston area.
About CYCLE Houston’s Bike Build
The focus of our organization’s endeavors is our bicycle program, through which we have granted over 185,000 bikes to some truly exceptional students!
n a survey we took with educators, we discovered that the 2nd grade is the last formative year in which students are learning to read and sound out what they are reading. Starting in the 3rd grade, students are transitioning to reading for content and understanding. After the 3rd grade, students with poor reading skills start becoming unwilling participants in negative academic, behavioral and income statistical predictors.
We partner with *Title One schools, where at least 75% of the students are low-income. We start the program with a pep rally at the school and end with a celebration when they receive their bikes.
We want to create excitement and a sense of ownership for the children towards learning! Their excitement encourages guardian participation and gives them a “learn does earn” reference point. Their skills developed with our program will carry them throughout their academic career, not only the skill to study, but hopefully this will encourage a positive and collaborative learning environment at school and at home. We want to enhance a positive self-esteem outlook upon goal success: because THEY earned it!
