Independence Day Trivia
Oh, the things you learn on the internet! We look forward to this time of year and all of the interesting ways that Independence Day is observed around the country. The Declaration of Independence was first printed on July 4, 1776, setting the date for a spectacular array of festivities and traditions.
The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks event occurs annually in New York City, and the tradition of fireworks is due to John Adams’ call for “Bonfires and Illuminations” in 1776 when the night sky was first lit up with celebratory fireworks. Today, Americans spend about $1.4 billion on fireworks each year.
In Philadelphia, the Liberty Bell is tapped 13 times by the descendants of the signers of the Declaration in honor of the original 13 colonies. The longest-running 4th of July parade is held in Bristol, Rhode Island, dating back to 1785. A televised hot dog-eating contest occurs every year at Nathan’s Famous Corporation on Coney Island, originally beginning in 1916. And note that Americans consume approximately 150 million hot dogs every July 4th! Also, Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the U.S.A.” gets nearly 25 times more views on July 4th than any other day of the year.

The Houston Symphony is producing a star Spangled Salute, The Woodlands is celebrating its 27th Annual Red, Hot & Blue Festival, Galveston is having a 4th of July Parade, and so is the City of Bellaire.
